Managing acidosis in dairy herds

Consistent and high energy intakes are needed for high levels of production of milk solids by dairy herds.  When ruminants are fed a diet high in readily fermentable carbohydrates from grain, byproducts and highly digestible pasture, a condition known as rumen acidosis can occur.   Most commonly, acidosis is present as a sub clinical condition causing lost productivity and unhealthy cattle.

“Irwin Stockfeeds  Graduate Program provides an invaluable opportunity for graduates with an Agricultural Science Degree and a strong interest in ruminant nutrition to commence their career in the Stockfeed and Agribusiness industries. The Graduate Program enabled me to build an expanse of knowledge in all aspects of the Stockfeed Industry.  With allocated mentors providing training, support and guidance, the program encourages productive working relationships with senior & experienced qualified nutritionists. Having completed the graduate program in October 2009, and gaining a permanent role with Irwin Stockfeeds, I would recommend this program as a perfect start to a rewarding career in the Stockfeed industry to anyone keen on entering the agricultural sector.”

A Word From Our Students

“Work experience with Irwin Stockfeeds was an extremely valuable two weeks. I gained a vast array of knowledge from dedicated nutritionists and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Activities included on-farm consultations, cold calls, staff meetings and a day in the feed mill. Knowledge gained involved animal nutrition, agronomy, communication and organisation which will all be very useful for any career path in agriculture.

I would highly recommend the program to students from all areas of agriculture because it is incredibly insightful and Irwin Stockfeeds were a fantastic organisation to work with.”

“As a student from the University of Melbourne, currently starting my 4th year of an Agricultural Science/Commerce double degree, the offer of work experience from Irwin Stockfeeds is invaluable.

To be able to see how a stockfeed company operates from production, through to sales, and the services offered by the nutritionists has been fantastic and covered exceptionally well within the work experience program.

It gives an insight into future career options that may not necessarily have been considered before, and allows students from different backgrounds to see what life is like as a consultant to the industry.”
